I can’t believe I’m half way through my training for the Santa Rosa marathon! Time flies…especially when you’re on a 12 week training schedule, but I’m glad to report that this week I’ve been much more positive. Realising I couldn’t downgrade my entry to the half- marathon distance gave me the motivation I needed and as a consequence I’ve really enjoyed my runs.
Here’s what I’ve been up to:
Monday: 8 miles in Golden Gate Park. This was my first time running here and I absolutely loved it. It’s relatively flat (by San Francisco standards) and also relatively quiet. There are lots of trails though the park but I stuck to the roads which drive follow the perimeter so I wouldn’t get lost. After a warm up, I did a mixture of tempo miles and fartlec. I actually felt really strong which was a confidence booster. Here are my splits; 9.32, 8.14, 8.36, 8.59, 9.22, 9.23, 9.11, 9.54(cool down)
Tuesday: Barre/TRX class. I’ve joined a local studio which does barre, TRX and circuit classes. I’ve always wanted to do barre but have never had a studio close to my house so I’m looking forward to going regularly. I went to a combined barre and TRX class which was really challenging but can see how it will help my marathon training; we did a lot of work on our glutes and core which I know are my weak areas.
Wednesday: Barre class. Another great class made harder by the fact everything hurt from the day before 🙂 I was supposed to go to the running club track session in the evening, but gave it a miss as my sporadic back pain had flared up and knew it wouldn’t be a good idea.
Thursday: Jasyoga followed by hill repeats. Instead of going to the track to do my intervals I decided to use what I have on my doorstep- hills! After a warm up I completed 10 hill repeats. I can’t tell you how long they were or what the elevation was but they were hard!
Friday: 2.5hour long run in Golden Gate Park. I was determined to enjoy this long run so didn’t run with my Garmin and went for time on my feet instead. I took it slow and listened to various podcasts and the time went by pretty quickly. I was very happy to stumble across a Wholefoods just outside the park at the end of my run so treated myself to an overpriced smoothie 😉
Saturday: TRX class.
Sunday: Camping! I actually prescheduled this post as from Saturday- Monday we’re camping in Northern California. I don’t think we’ll do any running, the main aim is relaxation!
I didn’t have chance to write a post for Monday before I left to go camping, so I’m hoping Bex will save the day and post on my behalf tomorrow… Hope you got the memo Bex?!
