Coconut oil is the oil of the moment. Sorry olive oil, you might be delicious drizzled on our salads and absorbed in our bread, but you’ve been usurped by something a little nuttier. There has been a plethora of information telling us that coconut oil is the healthiest oil on the market, but quite frankly, I need no persuasion.
SO, HOW CAN YOU USE COCONUT OIL?
EAT IT, DRINK IT
Coconut oil is delicious and it has become my favourite spoon-to-jar-to-mouth guilty pleasure (sorry almond butter.) It has numerous uses in cooking, and can be used for frying, roasting, baking and as a spread instead of butter. My favourite ways to consume it is stirred into my morning coffee (you must try this!), spread on rye bread with peanut butter and banana, stirred into porridge and chia seed puddings and to cook scrambled eggs (it makes them very light and fluffy).
Coconut oil provides natural nutrition for you hair and has been used for years in the Indian sub-continent for hair care. If your locks are looking frazzled from being over-heated with straighteners or from being in the sun, then applying coconut oil as a leave in conditioner can help restore its shine. It’s an amazing conditioner and provides your hair with all the essential proteins it needs to restore its glossiness – plus it will smell divine! Regularly massaging your scalp with coconut oil can also help to keep your hair dandruff free. A holiday must have!
Coconut oil can be used as a face and body moisturiser and is great for dry skin. I’ve got very sensitive skin and have had eczema since childhood – coconut oil has been an amazing discovery, helping me to keep my skin soft and silky and inflammation at bay.
I usually use coconut oil as a night cream before I go to bed. For me, it’s a little too greasy for the mornings, but I find that if I’ve applied it the night before then my skin is so much brighter and smoother in the morning.
My favourite brands of coconut oil are VitaCoco, Lucy Bee and Manna. These are all raw, hard-pressed and unprocessed coconut oils and taste delicious.
